PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Aspect 5 presents a new approach to multi-family housing in Los Angeles. AUX Architecture addresses the persistent challenges of natural light, ventilation, and spatial quality in dense urban environments with a four-story, five-unit development that reconfigures the conventional rowhouse typology to improve livability.
Traditionally, narrow lots produce two high-quality end units and three deep, dark center units. AUX Architecture’s design for Aspect 5 flips this paradigm by rotating the layout 90 degrees. This simple but radical move transforms the plan into four corner units and one central unit, creating shallower footprints that allow more natural light and cross-ventilation.
Designed as an alternative to suburban sprawl, condominium residents can live in the center of Los Angeles and enjoy indoor-outdoor living. Each of the 1,600-square-foot residences includes three levels of living space, generous glazing, a private rooftop deck with an outdoor kitchen, and sweeping views—including the Hollywood sign.
AUX Architecture used white cement board siding on the Aspect 5 façade, subtly shifting the materiality along the circulation path. This canyon-like central corridor runs vertically through the site. Clad in bright white stucco and open to the sky, it draws daylight deep into the building, reflecting light and creating a sense of vertical spaciousness. This open-air element also eliminates the need for artificial corridor lighting and contributes to passive cross ventilation. An expressive entry stair and elevator lead from the sunken parking level to the upper podium. Drought-tolerant landscaping is used throughout the site, as well as a rainwater capture-and-reuse system for irrigation.
Through strategic orientation and a focus on daylight, airflow, and livable design, AUX Architecture created a multifamily development that offers a replicable model for sustainable urban infill.
