PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Hollyridge Residence is a dynamic transformation of an existing house, turning a dark and fragmented home into a contemporary, light-filled retreat. The project reflects AUX’s broader philosophy: recognize the potential for adaptation and marry impactful design with sustainability.
Perched above Hollywood Hills with sweeping views toward the Hollywood Sign, the two-story, 2,800-square-foot home was once owned by Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Built in 1989, it was a riot of competing architectural styles accumulated from multiple owners and renovations over the decades. Working within a modest budget and a six-month schedule, AUX stripped away the mish-mash of Spanish Mission Revival, glass block, and Postmodern details on the facade while maintaining existing roofline and enhancing the building’s formal integrity. Black paint on the exterior unifies the different volumes with a contemporary language.
AUX’s edits allow for light to reach deep into the plan. Set into a steep hillside, the house primarily receives light from the downhill side. The renovation introduces large windows on the front façade to simplify the geometry and triangular clerestory windows at the roof peaks brighten the interior. Enlarged openings throughout the project and new sliding glass doors strengthen the relationships between indoors and outdoors, providing better access to the terrace and pool.
Inside, AUX selectively removed existing partitions and aligned refreshed circulation with view corridors, so that daylight could reach spaces had once felt dark and compartmentalized. The result is a gallery-like backdrop for daily life: museum-quality interiors with white surfaces, careful detailing, and a restrained material palate.
What was once an architectural patchwork now reads as a bright and cohesive home nestled in its landscape.
