PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Situated on a quiet block on Los Angeles west side, Wilkins Townhomes demonstrates AUX Architecture’s nuanced approach to multifamily housing. Comprising a mix of one- and two-story townhouse units, the project balances massing, materiality, and scale to create a dynamic composition that respects the character of the surrounding Westwood neighborhood.
The 11-unit complex achieves visual depth and rhythm through a thoughtful interplay of materials: light gray brick, white stucco, architectural concrete, and matte black polycarbonate. This carefully orchestrated palette forms a bright, modern checkerboard of solids and voids, animated by shifting patterns of light and shadow. Sensitive to its residential context, the building’s massing is stepped back from the street, allowing for a generous landscaped setback that both enhances the pedestrian experience and visually links the development to adjacent properties. Underground parking further reduces the project’s street presence, maintaining the neighborhood’s open, garden-like character.
From single family homes to multifamily complexes, good housing design emphasizes natural light and access to outdoor space. Ground-floor, two-story units open to private front and rear yards, while upper-level apartments feature expansive balconies that extend living space outdoors. Large, strategically oriented windows draw daylight deep into each unit, creating interiors that feel airy and luminous. Even the stairwell becomes a design feature; clad in translucent polycarbonate panels, it filters soft natural light into the circulation core, offering residents a distinctive experience as they move through the building.
Though taller than nearby structures, Wilkins Townhomes was met with broad community support and earned unanimous approval from the Westwood Design Review Board. The project embodies AUX Architecture’s broader ethos for multifamily housing—crafting high-quality, contextually responsive environments that elevate both spatial efficiency and the everyday experience of residents.
