The New York Review of Architecture, a bi-monthly newsprint publication, reviews…well, reviews architecture in New York. Until this past weekend, that is, when they debuted Issue 1 of the Los Angeles Review of Architecture.
We’re pleased to note our project with The Wende Museum, the Glorya Kaufman Creative Community Center, was included in their Shortcut section. Excerpt below; read more here.
“Wickersham and Wende’s founder/executive director, Justinian Jampol, conceived the design as a Swiss Army knife, shape-shifting to accommodate numerous unforeseen functions while existing as a compact, aesthetic whole. Continuing the visual language of the Wende’s 1940s-era armory facility next door and dipping into Brutalist references dripping with Cold War concrete, the Kaufman nonetheless mostly forgoes bunker body language. Rather, the new building lifts off its narrow site to make room for a beloved garden and gathering space below. Instead of another wall, the building forms a cultural corridor. How’s that for reunification?”
